About Numerology

Overview
(This section is excerpted from the book, Numerology: The Key to Your Inner Self, by Hans Decoz.)

Numerology is a language that allows you to expand the horizons of your spiritual awareness. It opens doors in your psyche that you may not have known existed. This is true of all language. Before there were words, there were only the most simple and basic thoughts, most of which were confined to survival. But with language came more complex relationships, more possibilities and vastly more creativity.

Take the word relativity. This word means that there is something other than absolute values in the universe. The word also means that what is true for you may not be true for someone else. Before Albert Einstein introduced his concept of relativity, the world was guided by a belief in absolutes -- that things were as they seemed to be, not only for you, but for everyone. But wit the emergence of the term relativity, and the far-reaching concepts that Einstein attached to it, humanity was now awakened to new ideas, possibilities, and relationships that shaped our view of life. Our spiritual horizon had been expanded by the introduction of a word that symbolized a large and complex meaning.

That same kind of expansion occurs when one is introduced to the language of numbers. Suddenly, the universe seems far greater and more complex, yet easier to grasp. Now you can think about things that previously were impossible to consider.

Symbols reveal relationships. They are the images that define the arrangement of multiple, often abstract, ideas. Symbols show us how important characteristics are related to each other. They reveal how things are related by their very nature.

For instance, let's consider a set of characteristics that may be within you. If we try to consider one particular talent or trait, we get no picture whatsoever. Let's say that trait is will. This abstract idea exists like a cloud in the sky, seeming separated from other clouds. But now introduce the symbol 1. It serves as an organizing principle for our minds, which attracts certain qualities that naturally belong together, and are related to each other, as if they were family members. The number 1 symbolizes will, as well as beginning, courage, determination, originality, independence, and individuality.

Why are these characteristics united? Because human life has taught us that the beginning of anything is naturally associated with other characteristics, such as resistance--bringing forth the need for will, determination, courage, originality, creativity, independence, and individuality. The 1, or beginning, now opens us up to relationships that are inherent in life--relationships that were in act always there, but existed in the abstract, and hence appeared separate. Their natural relationship perhaps existed outside of our grasp.

In the end, it's impossible to talk about patterns in life without symbols. Symbols serve to draw upon themselves the vast amount of knowledge that exists in the archetypal world. Archetypes are unique bundles of information, stored in the psyche until we have the means to attract their wealth into our lives. They convey knowledge of things that we previously did not know, or were not conscious of.

The beauty of the use of numbers and human characteristics is that they are naturally and inherently joined. There is nothing arbitrary about joining the number 1 with originality or inventiveness, because 1, no matter what language the number is used in, means the beginning, the origin, the first, the birth.

Because we have these symbols, we have the clarity to ask deep and probing questions about life. For example, were these symbols arbitrarily assigned to specific meanings, or is there an organic pattern behind the numbers and their meanings? Are numbers a reflection of a greater truth that exists beneath the surface of life?

The book, Numerology: The Key to Your Inner Self, attempts to answer that question. It will not only serve as a tool for understanding numbers, but it will also help you to better understand your life. However, it's essential to recognize that no tool--no matter how powerful and sophisticated--can approach the vastness of the universe and life itself. Numerology is a springboard to larger realities. But the universe itself is infinite. Numerology opens a window to the vastness of creation. That vastness exists within you. No matter what your numbers may say about you or others, all of us are a part of the infinite universe, and thus way beyond the limits that any tool can convey.

great post solane! star new

Here is a little bit from my favourite book 'The Element Encyclopedia of Secret Signs and Symbols' by Adele Nozedar.

"Numbers are the Universal language offered by the Deity to humans as confirmation of the Truth."
[St. Augustine of Hippo, 354-430]

On a superficial level, numbers are simply handy implements for counting things. However, underpinning the idea of the number as a basic tally device is a profound system of philosophy and symbolism that resonates through the entire world, operating in remarably similiar ways throughout most cultures and belief systems.

This notion, that numbers represent not only physical quantities but also the inherent qualities, laws, and powers of the Universe, is very ancient. It is described and explained in various ways, and is reflected in the mystery traditions, including those of the Pythagoreans, Babylonians, and Hindus, as well as in the Kabbalah. The form of the number, its conceptual nature, and its symbolic meanings carry sacred and mystical significance, a hidden code that can be cracked to reveal the secret construction of the Universe and man's place within it.

Numerology is the term used for the belief in the mystical, esoteric relationship between numbers and living things, physical objects, ideas, and concepts. Known to be one of the most ancient symbolic sciences, Plato called it "the highest level of knowledge". The Greeks, Romans, Indians, Chinese and Kabbalists considered numerology to be an essential part of the construction of the Universe. Pythagoras said that "numbers rule all things" and agreed with the ancient Chinese belief that numerology somehow held the key to our understanding of the harmony between the worlds of spirit and matter. Man and God, microcosm and macrocosm. The I Ching hints at this correlation. Pythagoras further posited that mathematics, music, architecture, and colour all resonated together in a harmonious balance that numbers could help explain and define. Numerology does not remove numbers from their practical role as defined by mathematics, but enhances their status as arbiters of a greater truth.

Many of the ancient truths associated with numbers, which go back as far as the Chaldeans, were not recognised by the early Christian Church, who viewed this ancient art with the same distrust that was applied to astrology and other forms of magick. It was considered ungodly or somehow devilish. Therefore, over time, the Church systematically undermined many of the concepts of numerology and so its mysteries were largely lost, although a little of the secret language of numbers has been reconstructed.

Though there are different types of numerology, there is consensus about the meanings of certain numbers. Here is a brief guide to the generally accepted ideas about the first eleven numbers. Zero, the mysterious "no number", whose discovery is possibly one of the most important in human history, is included.

0 - THE NOTHING, AND YET THE "EVERYTHING"
1 - THE ONENESS OF ALL, THE INDIVIDUAL
2 - DUALITY, BALANCE, SEPARATION
3 - THE SPIRIT, COMMUNICATION, WISDOM
4 - THE EARTH, SOLIDITY, UNDERSTANDING, ORDER
5 - HARMONY, JUSTICE, PROTECTION, LOVE
6 - MARRIAGE, UNION OF MALE AND FEMALE, BALANCE OF OPPOSITES
7 - SPIRITUALITY, THE OCCULT, INTELLIGENCE
8 - ETERNITY AND INFINITE, JUSTICE
9 - THE LIMITED AND THE LIMITLESS, EXPERIENCE AND VIRTUE, COMPLETION
10 - DEATH AND REBIRTH. PERFECTION

The Hindu philosophy of numerology is called Yantra and uses an individual's date of birth in combination with their names to discover aspects of someone's personality, as well as their destiny, favourable omens and conditions, and any traits or aspects to be aware of. The meanings of the numbers from one to nine in this system accurately convey the idea of the changing of the seasons as well as man's progress on the planet, and are as follows:

1 - SEED
2 - GERMINATION
3 - SPROUTING
4 - TESTING OR TRIALS
5 - GROWTH
6 - BUDDING
7 - BLOSSOM
8 - FRUIT
9 - HARVEST

The zero is represented as the 'bindhu', or dot, such as the one that marks the position of the third eye in the middle of the forehead.

To find the numbers of the "life path" in Yantra, the numbers of a person's date of birth are added together. For example, a birth date of August 7, 1963 works out as 8+7+1+9+6+3 = 34, which reduces to the single number of 3+4 = 7

I must admit that I know little about Numerology, although I always intended to research it someday. My father has had a passing interest in it. It is very interesting how numbers can tell us so much about ourselves. It makes you realize how literally everything in the Universe connects, how every piece is a part of some very large and deliberate puzzle.

How even science relies on mathematics and the language of numerical relationships to explain the nature of our world and existence itself...numbers are symbols and symbols are information encoded. Like astrology, I think numerology has been overlooked and put in the 'not to be taken seriously' basket. In times to come, I think this will change. Look at the reverence already being given sacred geometry and the Fibonacci Sequence, both of which explain existence and are based on numbers....

Huh, I forgot that everything is symbolism. I guess you typically don't think of numbers as symbols, but they are. And you're right, all symbols have mythical truths to tell us.

It is really strange when it comes down to random things that happen for a specific reason at a specific time it seems that things are not so random after all even though they very well might be synchronized through the force of some higher power yet that can not be proven.

Becoming the change...

I like to know why things work and so as a result I like to be able to take things apart and then put them back together again rebuilt like brand new. The problem is in the changes over time usually the old is worn and corroded in such a way that things which were once separate are now fused together in strange ways. If you go to disassemble one part you end up braking housings which require additional funds to support and rebuild with brand new structures.

It seems that the same principles generally apply to a lot of aspects not only including equipment but in the basic design of our social networks and beyond.
