Being Your Own Valentine

Whether you're single this Valentine's Day or have a sweetheart, why not celebrate the holiday with girl friends? The women of Spiral Muse, a network of art and spirituality, are sharing the love among sisters. Deirdre Candelaria of Spiral Muse told me by email, "Most of the messages coming our way, during this time of the year, are to Be someone else's valentine. The opportunity, with this theme, is to celebrate yourself first, honoring the one who can truly bring love into your life: YOU."
Valentine's Day coincides with the New Moon in airy Aquarius (the 13th), the sign of genius and innovation. And one focus of the Spiral Muse gathering is to "honor the goddess Sophia this month, the goddess of feminine wisdom of the mysteries of life." There is a lot of Aquarius in the skies now (Sun, Venus, Neptune, Chiron, and Mercury tomorrow). In her book, God Herself, the Feminine Roots of Astrology, Geraldine Thorsten calls Aquarius, the great-granddaughter of the Muses and their priestesses. The ancient Greeks had feminine guardians of the arts in these muses. They are Clio for history; Urania, astronomy; Thalia, comedy; Melpomene, tragedy; Erato, love songs; Polyhymnia, oratory; Calliope, epic poems; Euterpe, music and Terpsichore, dance.
It's fascinating to note that the word muse means to learn, to direct one's mind toward. Writes Thorsten, "The arts over which they presided indicate that history, a society's collective memory of its experience, and astronomy...warranted religious status because they were crucial to our being able to orient ourselves." These feminine guardians made sure the collective story was one that kept us pointed toward humanity's highest values.
At this Valentine's Day, we women honor our hearts when we vow to respect ourselves and each other. We can look for inspiring ways to direct our minds toward bringing higher values into culture. The earliest images of Aquarius depicted a priestess pouring water from a vessel, symbolizing the Great Mother as the Water of Life and Wisdom. Some serious magic can happen that's felt by the whole group, if everyone comes to it with a sincere attitude.
Some suggestions:
Set an intention for the evening to avoid the chaos of chatter.
Make prayers for what needs healing in the collective.
Appeal to a muse to go deeper into an area of knowledge.
Write and share the ideal traits of your future beloved (this works!)
Hold hands and feel the currents going around the circle.
Everyone bring a dish, so the hostess isn't overwhelmed.
Exchange high quality chocolates and other sweet treats.
Make Valentines for each other and yourself.
