An easy way to understand the Zodiac is through its divisions by quality. Each sign of the Zodiac is assigned to one of the three qualities (cardinal, fixed or mutable). This category tells you how it moves, its modus operandi, which explains why it's also known as the modality.

You can see the rhythm of the qualities in the seasons, especially Spring. You have the big bang of Aries ( cardinal), followed by the ripening fertility of Taurus ( fixed), which leads into the highly social, scattering seed time of Gemini ( mutable.) You can find these qualities in your birth chart. Where they fall in the houses let you know where you initiate, where you settle in, and where you're experimenting with new forms.
