Full Moon in Scorpio

By Molly Hall, About.com

Here's the chart for the Full Moon in Scorpio, exact on May 9th, 12:01 a.m. EDT.

This month's Full Moon is in Scorpio, the sign that takes us to the soul depths, and through a healing catharsis, has a transforming effect. What's sick and twisted in our psyches can come out of the shadows, since Full Moons are about illumination. All the secret rages, jealousies, obsessions and resentments that dwell in the subconscious rise for expression, and sexual passion peaks. It's a Full Moon to exorcise personal demons, by shining light on them.

You might tell your story through art, dance, music or a heart-to-heart with someone you trust. Scorpio is about the death and rebirth cycles we go through in life. At this Full Moon , you can identify what's dead weight in your life, and perform a mercy killing to transform it into something new. It might be behaviors that you know are a waste of your vital energy; some that come to mind are 1) keeping a negative situation alive by feeding it with gossip, 2) overdramatizing your troubles, so they eclipse anything good that happens, 3) wallowing in what's toxic, and being romanced by the violent or sadistic, 4) going along with shadenfruede of our times, taking secret pleasure in others' pain.

We all have a shadow side, and only you know when you're letting it control your life. Only you know how it keeps you from being your best self. Since the Full Moon is in opposition to the Sun in Taurus, the questions are how to best channel all this raw intensity, to making life better day-to-day. The polarity of the Sun and Moon are in fixed signs, so what we're dealing with is deeply rooted, stubborn, possibly stuck in one way of doing things. What's opened here, with the Full Moon, is a moment to really see the entrenched structure of the psyche, and how it shapes our lives and relationships. When approached with unconditional love for yourself and others, there can be a casting off, a shedding of the skin, like the snake, always associated with Scorpio's promise of renewal.

Here's something sure to bring Uranian surprises; the Sun-Moon opposition are square to Jupiter-Neptune-Chiron in Aquarius. Any stubborn and apathetic resistance to change is brought into tension with an expansive, urgent healing vibe. Aquarius shows us that change doesn't have to be a long drawn out ordeal -- sometimes it happens quickly. We get the sweeping perspective of this air sign, and that enables us to see ourselves in a different context....perhaps as a cosmic time traveler having a life experience. We can link some of our personal demons, to that of the collective, to see that it's not just us. We're all struggling with many of the same neurosis, fears, insecurities and resistance to change. This too, helps us rise above, especially if we come together to heal.

One key to resolving the tensions of this T-square are found in the harmonious sextile of the Moon to Saturn in Virgo. The Sun is also in trine to this healing earth sign. So we can intuit that looking to Saturn Virgo's patience, integrity, sense of responsibility, will help us handle all that's released from the murky depths. If the Full Moon reveals hidden agendas and secrets (Scorpio), we can soberly assess what can be done, and start the work of restoring balance. We find the daily discipline to transform what's poisonous to the earth and our bodies. Saturn shows us that the small acts, our words and deeds, add up to living a wholesome, natural life with nothing to hide.

Saturn is complemented by Mercury in its own sign Gemini; this helps us analyze situations from a dispassionate perspective. What's been distorted by emotion can be seen more clearly. Mercury is in retrograde, as well, and is sure to show different angles, altering our perception even more. This can provoke much deep soul mining and healing, a process that once started, can't be rushed. If stuff you thought you had resolved is churned up at the Full Moon, be kind to yourself, and invite healing with prayer or ritual. The process of healing takes us into uncertainty, and a sense of going backwards. The Full Moon may kick off an unraveling to ever deeper layers of the Self. From that core essence, after the false and outgrown is tossed off, the new can be born.

Lastly, whatever heavy stuff is dislodged at the Full Moon can be met with the spirit of Venus-Mars in Aries. If the old You doesn't resonate any more, it's time to step into new ways of being. Aries has that sense of adventure to start off again, without looking back. Venus and Mars create the pull away from giving up and settling for a half-lived life, and gets us fired up about real change.
